Is McNeil as tough as they say?
— Lt. Vincent Hanna, Heat. McNeil Island Corrections Center is the last prison left in North America that’s only accessible by boat or air. It’s home to 1400 inmates, several hundred of which are incarcerated in the state’s Special Commitment Center, a post-sentence housing and treatment facility. There, Axis II inmates (those whose underlying personality conditions go beyond Axis I mental/clinical disorders so far they pose a further risk to others) are held after they’ve served their judge-ordered sentences.
